Injury Prevention: benefits of ergonomics

THE EVOLUTION OF ERGONOMICS

Ergonomics has been around since the beginning of the industrial evolution of the late1800’s and early 1900’s. It has improved and evolved from aviation to military and now to the increased complexities of things people use like advanced technology.

WHAT IS ERGONOMICS?

"Ergonomics can be defined simply as "the study of work"... Adapting tasks, work stations, tools, and equipment to fit the worker. This can help reduce physical stress on a worker's body and eliminate many potentially serious, disabling work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs)." -OSHA

A good ergonomics program like Ergologics can reduce cost, improve productivity, improve worker’s quality of work, improve employee engagement and create a better safety culture for your company.

Ergonomics has two major objectives: The first is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency with which work and other activities are carried out, such as increasing convenience of use, reducing errors and increasing one’s productivity. The other is to enhance desirable human values: improve safety, reduce fatigue and stress, increase comfort, increase job satisfaction and overall quality of life.

WHAT ERGONOMICS IS NOT…

“Ergonomics is not just applying a checklist and guidelines. Ergonomics is not using oneself as a the model for designing things and ergonomics is not just common sense.“

-Sanders S. Mark and McCormick J.Ernest. Human Factors in Enhigineering and Design.New York, McGraw-Hill Inc, 1993.

While one may think it is easy to apply ergonomics in the workplace or that you can train someone in ergonomics, it is not. A successful ergonomic program or an ergonomic specialist is educated and has vast experience in ergonomics. For example: Ergologics has over 40+ years of experience and conducted over 19,000 workplace assessments. Together, we are experts on the human movement system and how they adapt to their work environment.

This is why it make sense to hire Ergologics and it is NOT just common sense.
